I got the following reply from someone on the Linux Kernel Mailing List:

"There doesn't seem like there's anything wrong here, the /dev/sda
device should be available. Unless there's some kind of udev problem or
something that's screwing up the device nodes.."

So, any suggestions how I can debug this?
