I got a Dell XPS M1530 laptop which came with Windows Vista Home Premium SP1 preinstalled in June 2008. In the Device Manager of Vista, it indicates my touchpad as "PS/2 Compatible Mouse" under "Mice and other pointing devices" sub-heading.
Just like the first post in this bug report, when I tried the Live CD of both Xubuntu 8.10 Alpha 5 and Ubuntu 8.04 (Final), the cursor/touchpad/mouse starts behaving randomly by moving fast randomly all over the screen and clicks on random things, moving windows around, opening windows, messing up my gnome bars etc etc. with me only moving my finger across the touchpad. I couldn't install either Xubuntu 8.10 Alpha 5/Ubuntu 8.04 (Final) after choosing the "Install Xubuntu" option in the initial screen which loads up when you start Live CD i.e the screen which gives options - "Try Xubuntu without any change to your computer" "Install Xubuntu" "Check CD for defects" "Test memory" "Boot from first hard disk" because when you get to the installer the cursor/touchpad/mouse starts behaving in the same random manner. Worse still, the problem is not related to just Xubuntu and Ubuntu alone. I tried openSUSE 11, Fedora 9 and even in them the cursor/mouse/touchpad behaves in a random manner. The cursor/mouse/touchpad works in a normal way in Puppy Linux and SliTaz Linux because, I think, may be due to their inclusion of Xvesa instead of X.org. The cursor/mouse/touchpad works in normal way even when using the Live CD of ReactOS. And of course, it runs normally in Vista since it came preinstalled.
