I also have this problem. I have and Acer Aspire 9410 and and Intel chipset and 945GM Video.
If the screen blanks for a few seconds, no issue. However, If I leave it longer, then it never wakes up. I cannot get it to wake using: CTRL+ALT+BACK, CTRL+ALT+DEL or the magic SysRq (which doesn't appear to be enabled at all - but should be). I am forced to hard power down.
