Thank you for the response. Sound has worked perfectly for months now. I think (but I'm not sure) that the sound problems occurred when I installed Virtualbox. I've heard it's buggy for some people. After removing it and doing all sorts of cleanup to get sound working again, I have never tried to reinstall Virtualbox. So, who knows?
My only complaints now are the numeric keypad not working bug, a Firefox bug (the first time I hit bookmarks, it wants to bookmark my current page. After that, it works fine), and a Thunderbird bug ( I can't compose in Thunderbird, I have to use a word processor and cut and paste.) I love Ubuntu, and am known amongst the people I know to be the world's biggest Windo** hater. I installed Hardy Heron the day it came out. That's the version I had the problem with. Thanks again!
