For a 3G, it isn't necessary to wipe out everything to recover. You can keep the packages.
In /var/mobile/Media/iTunes_Control: mv iTunes/ iTunes-backup At the next sync, iTunes will consider the iPhone to be blank, and offer to replace everything with the last backup. Cydia and packages installed through Cydia remain.
