For a 3G, it isn't necessary to wipe out everything to recover.  You can
keep the packages.

In /var/mobile/Media/iTunes_Control:

        mv iTunes/ iTunes-backup

At the next sync, iTunes will consider the iPhone to be blank, and offer
to replace everything with the last backup.  Cydia and packages
installed through Cydia remain.

Before you sync, you could have copied the entire directory to a backup:

     cp -a iTunes/ iTunes-backup

when you realize that the libgpod didn't do its job:
    rm -rf iTunes
   cp -a iTunes-backup iTunes

and everything will be back to the way it was.
