Perhaps you can solve the problem in a way similar to https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-input- synaptics/+bug/262276 by adding some options to “/usr/share/hal/fdi/policy/20thirdparty/11-x11-synaptics.fdi”. There is a special section for the ALPS touchpad in that file.
