Hi I can confirm the above issue with my Dell Latitude C600 when running 8.04.1 live cd with no modifications to boot params. It just hangs during initial loading or gets to a brown ubuntu background and hangs there.
I have just tried the Intrepid 8.10 Alpha 5 desktop live cd and was able to get to a command prompt but got no further.
