Switching bootloader under conditions that would be fairly opaque to the user 
would be a pain to support. Giving users the choice (at least in the non-expert 
modes) means asking a deeply technical question of users who shouldn't have to 
care. It also means supporting lilo as a bootloader for default installations. 
Checking wasn't implemented either because this wasn't caught before release or 
there was insufficient time to implement a proper check and response.

My comment about the release notes in the other bug was a reference to 
<http://www.ubuntu.com/download/releasenotes/606>, which appears to have no 
link to the wiki page about known issues in Ubuquity.
