Further testing has shown that Samba hangs on trying to resolve the hosts file. Eliminating hosts from the resolve order allows smbclient to do name resolution. In Konqueror using the Samba Shares link is still a bust. However entering //hostname/servicename directly does work. Also using Add a Network Folder to create a network folder works. Is seems the problem lies in whatever program is called by Samba Shares.
