I can confirm this behaviour on both of my systems: a Dell Dimension
1100 (Celeron 2.8Ghz, 1GB ram, Intel 82865G integrated graphics) and
Dell Inspiron 8000 (P3 800Mhz, 196MB ram, ATI Mobility M4). There's a
general feeling of sluggishness and excessive repainting occurs
particularly when dragging windows - however, changing theme details
from Human to Clearlooks results in a massive improvement.

Is this related to slow cairo rendering? Changing themes doesn't prevent
sluggishness when dragging a window over a desktop full of icons,
there's slight jerkiness as the icons are repainted. I think a composite
manager (xcompmgr/compiz) can only prevent that completely?
