Latest version of Nautilus (Gnome 2.24) have list view option it also
supports tabbed browsing, probably not available at 8.04

Gnome commander is a nc like application available at the repository. Also
mc (midnight commender) which is terminal based

Choose the desktop that fits you the best. and no need to uninstall GNOME,
all the desktops can co-exists together, you choose which desktop to use in
login screen

   - Gnome tends to be simple but consistent, the developers follows their
HIG strictly (but less customization options)
   - KDE comes with many Customizations (and feels more 'windowish' to me,
   which I don't like)
   - Xfce is very lightweight, good for low-end systems, (sometimes feels
   quite limiting)
