In my experience it depends on what you're used to. For most people who prefer GUI based IRC, XChat is generally held in the highest regard. For text based (console) then irssi is the general popular choice. Both have their pros and cons. Personally I'm a big XChat fan. That being said I've customised it over time to be what I want it to be (fonts, sizes, options, backgrounds, colours, etc) so maybe if I went to the default one I'd not like it much either. I also use IRC quite a lot and have multiple servers with multiple windows open 24/7.
