Ubuntu has great accessibility tools such as orca for the gui or
espeak for the cli (which some blind users prefer) check out:

Also if you happen to be on identi.ca (open source version of twitter)
there is a very adept blind linux user by the name of kajarii
http://identi.ca/kajarii that may be able to assist you further. He
also hangs out in irc although not a ubuntu user I believe the
application knowledge should transfer.
