Hi Geoffrey, It is a shortened version of distribution. As Linux is just a kernel, a distro is when someone assembles the kernel with a collection of applications and tools, such a the GNU utilities which are commonly used by all distros, X for the GUI, GNOME for a desktop environment, firefox for a web browser, OpenOffice.org for word processing, presentations etc and so on.
