Video editing is a very broad topic, ranging from adjusting the brightness, to... well, everything that Pixar does for Disney movies :) A good free software video editor is PiTiVi, and you can read documentation about it here: http://www.pitivi.org/ PiTiVi is available in the main Ubuntu repos. It has improved dramatically in recent months / years, so I would suggest using Ubuntu 10.10 or 11.04 Alpha to get a recent version of PiTiVi.
