The main reason against using photographs is that they often contain too much 
contrast and small details which obscurs the icons on the desktop and 
distracts the eye, not to mention the cultural and psychological aspects, 
etc. Actually, the Gutsy desktop as well as the elephant pic are based on 
photographs :-)
