Use the Control Centre "Themes" applet to change the theme to "High contrast inverse", logout, login again (workrave seems to have some problems picking up theme changes). Then right-click the workrave applet, select "Rest break" -> http://www.gnome.org/~chpe/images/workrave-a11y-bug.png
To see the other problem, right-click and choose Preferences, Interface, Applet, Placement: Place all timers in one spot.
