CALL FOR PAPERS
Special Issue on User Interfaces for Recommender Systems
User Modeling and User-Adapted Interaction:
The Journal of Personalization Research
(An international journal published by Springer Verlag)
UMUAI Web site: http://www.umuai.org/
***********************************************************************
SCOPE OF THE SPECIAL ISSUE:
Recommender systems provide valuable support for users who are searching
for products and services that fit their wishes and needs. The practical
relevance of these systems is shown by a variety of commercial
applications such as Amazon, Netflix, Trip Advisor, or Yahoo.
Recommender systems research has long focused on optimizing the
predictive accuracy of recommendation and filtering algorithms, a trend
epitomized by the recent Netflix prize. An extremely important dimension
not captured in this attention on predictive accuracy is the nature and
perceived qualities of recommender systems from the user’s point of
view. The user interface (UI) of a recommender system can have a
critical and decisive effect on factors such as the overall system
usability, system acceptance, item rating behavior, selection behavior,
trust, willingness to buy, willingness to reuse the recommender system,
and the willingness to promote the system to other persons.
Recommender user interface research has become increasingly popular in
this highly interdisciplinary research field. Due to the high interest
in this topic (e.g., ACM Conference on Recommender Systems, IUI
Conference Series, UMAP Conference Series, ICCBR Conference Series,
IJCAI Conference Series, and different workshops on Recommender Systems)
we are preparing a journal special issue on “User Interfaces for
Recommender Systems”. The goal of this special issue is to show novel
and innovative research in the field. We encourage the submission of
both studies aimed at modeling and studying the effect of UI design on
user assessment, and case studies illustrating innovative UI techniques
applied to recommender systems. More specifically, topics of interest
include but are not limited to:
- Psychological issues in recommender user interfaces
- Recommender user interfaces and usability aspects
- Evaluation of the perceived qualities of recommender systems
- Cultural influences on recommender user interfaces
- Argumentation and explanation in recommender systems
- Consumer behavior and decision modeling for recommender systems
- Modeling recommendation dialogs and dialog strategies
- Preferences elicitation in recommender systems
- Personalized interfaces for knowledge acquisition and maintenance
- Recommendation of complex products and services
- Innovative interfaces and media for recommender systems
HOW TO SUBMIT:
Submissions to the special issue should follow the UMUAI formatting
guidelines and submission instructions available at:
http://www.umuai.org/paper_submission.html
Each submission should note that it is intended for the Special Issue on
User Interfaces for Recommender Systems.
Potential authors are asked to submit a tentative title and short
abstract (which can be altered for the actual submission) as soon as
possible to assist in the formation of a panel of appropriate reviewers.
UMUAI is an archival journal that publishes mature and substantiated
research results on the (dynamic) adaptation of computer systems to
their human users, and the role that a model of the system about the
user plays in this context. Many articles in UMUAI are quite
comprehensive and describe the results of several years of work.
Consequently, UMUAI gives "unlimited" space to authors (so long as what
they write is important).
Authors whose paper exceeds 40 pages in journal format (including
illustrations and references) are however requested to supply a short
justification upon submission that explains why a briefer discussion of
their research results would not be advisable.
REVIEW PROCESS:
Submissions will undergo the normal review process, and will be reviewed
by three established researchers selected from a panel of reviewers
formed for the special issue. Barring unforeseen problems, authors can
expect to be notified regarding the review results within three months
of submission.
IMPORTANT DATES:
- Notification of Intent to Submit: as soon as possible
- Submission of Title and Abstract: Nov 5th, 2010
- Manuscript Submission: Dec 1st, 2010
