since all you're doing is adjusting all the paths to get at the top of the tree, i wonder if you shouldnt just introduce a new variable for the top and then base everything off that. OBJTREETOP = $(OBJTREE)$(SUBTREE) and then in the spl subdir, you set SUBTREE to "/../..". this would avoid sprinkling of a specific CONFIG option throughout the build system. -mike
