There are seeral reasons, the most prominent being 1) because it's simply not needed in 95% of all cases 2) because it's bad to distribute vital configuration information into several independent files and 3) because we're preparing the grounds for a Kconfig based setup so we want to have all config options controlled by a single mechanism (board config file).
