Most IPQ40xx devices have a slot of 512kB left for the bootloader which cannot be easily expanded, however, that should still be enough for synced DTS anyway. I am now more familiar with U-boot and really dont like the IPQ40xx target as it is and would like to rework it, including using upstream DTS.
