Problem gelöst. Im Server-Log fand sich folgende Fehlermeldung:
/usr/bin/gm convert: Memory allocation failed (unable to allocate string) [Cannot allocate memory].
Die zwei Befehle gleich am Anfang der localconf.php haben das Problem gelöst.
Nun gehen fast alle Bilder auf der Webseite.
