Correct, install either the SSL or the non-SSL package. Both together
make troubles.

Yes, checkout latest version from the SVN repository OpenSSL 0.9.8.h
is supported sinc rev. 161/162.

No way, however both are required only if the server requests a client
certificate which is mostly not the case.
