My experience with these so-called "smart" firewalls doing stateful inspection is that they are dumber than they seem! I had a Cisco cable router back in 2003 which was altering PORT/PASV commands' port numbers in FTP. Back then, it was an unknown issue to me and caused lots of frustration...
