When Microsoft believes .NET is sufficiently versatile, fast and stable 
for applications it actually sells, like SQL server, compilers and 
Office, that will be when I'll look at it.  Meanwhile Microsoft uses 
Win32 and C for all those things.  

I'm sure there is a current application market for .NET, from developers 
that used to use Visual Basic to create GUI applications (including my 
own company), but then Microsoft never used VB either for it's own 
products.
