I keep thinking about this as football/soccer coverage has mushroomed among the sports channels since the last World Cup and as FOX hasn’t participated, they have to put a show together from scratch. I tried to watch the FOX late night show four years ago and it was difficult to sit through. Their star commentator was Chad “Ochocinco” Johnson, who does have charisma and broadcasting chops, but couldn’t break down film or talk about teams or games in any detail. They had a group of ex-US team players who could talk formations and tactics but had no broadcasting talent. And when the US got eliminated they all lost interest and the show became unwatchable.
I have no idea which other sports channels and networks would do a World Cup wrap up through streaming. CBS Sports Golazo has a 24/7 football channel and they could convene their first team panel with Thierry Henry and I’d prefer to watch that. ESPN has their regular football panel and they would be interesting to watch. Even if NBC was interested they could bring in Rebecca Lowe with Robbie Earle, Robbie Mustoe, and Tim Howard to stream a daily wrap up. These other entities might have to wait until the next day to do a commentary show but it’s guaranteed to be much better than whatever Corden and his friends can come up with.
