The longtime owner seems to have lost his license to sell alcohol, after
which some strange business dealings seem to have occurred. The Laurel
Canyon store made famous by The Doors and frequented by every famous person
you can think of shuts its doors this week.

For years, it was the only store in California that sold dark chocolate
KitKats, imported specifically for David Bowie. Anyone who has ever driven
through Mulholland Drive knows it’s the only store up there. The area was
(and continues to be) a Mecca for a certain breed of singer, writer, actor,
performer. Mostly mansions now, but in the ‘60s and ‘70s, it was
comparatively affordable housing for hippies, druggies, and — yeah — the
Manson family.
