My mother, like many an American *hausfrau*, fawned over him as Dr. Kildare, especially when he backed up the role with a string of sappy ballads released by "Kildare" studio MGM's sister record label (only "Rome Will Never Leave You," a Bacharach/David tune performed on the show, cracked the *Billboard* Hot 100)... he went strictly acting after that (I saw him in Richard Lester's *The Three Musketeers* as a kid)... but his greatest was still to come: *Shogun, The Thorn Birds*... with occasional returns to Broadway, where he'd first shined in *Hamlet*... should I go on?
