The charm of the past and current generation of late night hosts is their acknowledgment of when a joke or bit doesn’t work. Dave was a master of it, bringing the audience into his own discomfort. Seth gleefully throws a writer under the bus when a monologue joke falls flat. My big problem with After Midnight is every joke gets a huge laugh and earns points whether or not it’s actually funny.
