He wasn't preaching but he wasn't really trying to be funny either. I think, like most people, he is dealing with the strain of these times. All of the behind the scenes stuff we read and hear of about these daily talk shows relates how they keep the host grounded by keeping everything except the guests the same day after day. When the shutdown was announced in the spring Colbert turned his show into a podcast like all of the talk shows. He could deal with it because it was only temporary. Now 5 months later there's no end in sight. He's back in the Ed (office building) but there are no staff meetings and his guest interviews are still being done remotely. The stuff his guests usually plug, outside of politics, has been suspended and the live audience which usually gives the host his energy has been gone for a long time.
