I’ve watched the first episode of “The Romanoffs,” the new Amazon series from “Mad Men “creator Matthew Weiner. It tells of the story of people who claim relations to the royal Russian family killed in the Bolshevik revolution. I think there’s a eight episodes, with new ones dropping every Friday. The first episode is listed as almost 90 minutes, but seems to last longer. It is slow paced. On top of it, as soon as they introduced a key character, the new housekeeper, I guessed four-fifths of the rest of plot. To crib from David Letterman, I could see it coming up Fifth Avenue. I got the ending wrong. So not only is it moving slow, I know what’s coming. Perhaps because Aaron Eckhart is one of the major players in this episode, I expected an ending like his “In the Company of Men.” I was wrong. Marthe Keller plays the main role and does a wonderful job. I don’t remember her but she’s been in bunch of films I’ve seen, beginning with “Marathon Man.” There’s really no bad acting the show. And the photography of Paris is wonderful. There were some poignant moments. But this might be challenging to watch because of its pace. I will stick with it because of “Mad Men.” If you’ve never watched the DVD commentary for the first season of “Mad Men,” do it. They point out so much I missed the first time around. So I have confidence that Weiner will tie it altogether in the end. I will at least watch through episode 3, which has Christina Hendricks.
