The Millionaire analogy isn't bad, as it fell victim to constant/over
exposure and multiple copycats.

When I was a wee lad growing up in the untamed wilderness of Pomona, CA, we
had a channel at the upper end of the dial (an actual dial)... channel 56.
And on channel 56 was a human sideshow called Wally George. I'm sure Wally
was not the first right wing lunatic to grace the UHF band, but he was
ours, and watching him was comedy. Aside from (orchestrated) feuds with LA
DJ Rick Dees, George received little to no attention outside of channel 56.
His studio audience (mostly drunk/high college guys from UCI or CSF)
treated the show like a wrestling match, hooting and hollering and getting
tossed out by security.

Eventually, Morton Downey, Jerry Springer, Bill O'Reilly's Inside Edition,
and a phalanx of other white shouty guys proved to be Wally's downfall.
When it is just one lone nut screaming on his soapbox, well that's that.
But when there are thousands with torches and an ally in the Oval Office,
it changes things.
