The television network Epix has a new series “Get Shorty” based on the Elmore Leonard book. The first three episodes are available to stream online for free. I watched them today. I definitely recommend everyone watch the opening shot of the first episode. It was so good I watched it twice. I’m trying to figure out how they did it. At first I thought there was digital trickery. Now I think they removed a window and passed the Steadicam through. I have mixed feelings about the three episodes I have seen so far. The basic plot is the same as the movie. A debt collector gets sent to Hollywood and stumbles into the movie making business. In the movie, John Travolta’s Chili Palmer is a sympathetic character and I bought his love of movies. In the TV show, Chris O'Dowd's Miles Daly is less sympathetic and his leap into movies is less plausible. His Irish accent is also distracting. Shorty refers to a different character this time. If I read the credits correctly the series was created by Alan Coulter, who directed a dozen “Sopranos” episodes. This show seems closer to “Breaking Bad” in tone and sensibility. Ray Romano is fine as the weary producer fighting off bankruptcy. I have seen him do better in other roles. Definitely check out the opening shot. Maybe you will find the rest worth watching.
