Agreed. And it doesn't have to be real AND sad. When Jon Stewart had on a
crossword puzzle editor, you could tell how much he loved crosswords. When
Letterman first told the story of a bear breaking into his home, you could
see the childlike glee with which he shared this odd experience. Watching
Jay Leno's YouTube channel and seeing him talk passionately about cars is
infinitely better than he ever was as a Tonight Show host. Watching Johnny
Carson genuinely elated when a new comic had a killer debut set on his
Tonight Show, you could see the sparkle in his eyes and know that comic was
gonna be a star.

There is too much pretense in the business today. I'm not even sure Jimmy
Fallon knows who he really is, let alone be able to be as open about his
life as Kimmel was yesterday.
