I've been using Thunderbird since it was in beta and I never had a problem with it. I notice my Mac version is v45 so you might want to update it unless your OS won't support it. I originally set up my gmail account for mailing lists and to use when signing up for something at a website in order to keep spam from getting to my POPmail account. These days about 80% of my email interactions are through gmail, and as spam is no longer the annoyance it once was, I might over time use gmail for everything.
