Back in the 50s, NBC, the network carrying the Oscars then, did a prime time nominations show for a few years and it wasn't a success in either ratings or artistically. And I would think that if they were going to do it in prime time, ABC would rather have a star-studded live show than a pre-fabricated recorded show, even if the recorded had more stars than the live show would have.
