Seems like firing Warner Wolf would most likely be a cost-cutting move. Radio DJ (now podcaster) Don Geronimo has talked about this sort of thing in the radio business on his show. Going back decades now, the trend is that while radio stations will (grudgingly) pay top talent, they're like "OK, you're the star, you can do this show with one minimum-wage staffer and an unpaid intern, right? Maybe two unpaid interns if you behave yourself." They won't pay for talent to *support* the talent, in other words.
