It struck me as the kind of performance that would be better to see in person than as a clip after many more-polished numbers. But they had it, and needed to fill time, which leads me to: > I guess it is too easy to add that SNL has long been 60 minutes of content > poured into a 90 minute slot (at its best), That's fair. > so I don't think that is too negative a review of last night's Prince Tribute > show. There's a key difference. SNL is long past the point where they'd put a different kind of element into the show if it struck their fancy. Some percentage of the content may be below the acceptable level in a given week [once again, too easy], but it's all SNL comedy. For the Prince tribute, I expected Prince. One "Prince Show" would have been tolerable as a way of showing what they'd done. Four, which is essentially the same sketch four times, was too much. > I am sure Fallon made sense to host it, with his SNL and music connections, > and to cross promote for this Tonight Show, but man, he still so does not > do it for me. He is nice enough, and I am sure sincere, but I just find him > so inarticulate, superficial, and cloying. He was also easily available on the short notice they had. But my reaction to him was the same as yours. I would have much preferred a show that was just the performances, even if it only ran an hour. (They could put on a half-hour of their "viral hits" afterward.) Hell, if I'd known that they'd used up all the music when they got to Armisen, I'd have turned it off and been happier. -- -- TV or Not TV .... The Smartest (TV) People!
