We need to remind ourselves that Boomers are now in FNC's de facto target audience and that classic rock has pretty much become Republican music. Ever since Disco Demolition changed AOR radio forever, there's only been one black guy considered classic rock--and that's Hendrix. It's been 30 years since Lee Greenwood and don't forget how often Ted Nugent appears on FNC--and that most personality morning men on classic rock radio are teabaggers.
The rockers that were playing Prince music yesterday were mostly AAAs like WXRT in Chicago or KFOG in SF that generally appeal to more left-of-center audiences and GenXers--and I wonder how much Prince they had been playing before his death. The Current in Prince's hometown has been a constant supporter--he gave money to the station (they're part of Minnesota Public Radio) and would call up programming regularly to tout new artists he liked. It's no surprise that they did a multi-hour marathon yesterday after his death was announced.
