My favorite “backstage” story from the show was from Andre Royo, who played the
heroin-addicted “Bubbles” on the show. They often did guerilla filming on the
streets of Baltimore, keeping the cameras and crew hidden as much as possible.
Royo said he was between takes one day, and a civilian walked up to him and
handed him a bag of heroin, saying he looked like he needed a fix. He now
refers to that as his “street Oscar.”

Several guys inspired Omar and one of them was cast as a guy who protected Omar
in jail.

Truly a remarkable story, the way the producers of the show incorporated known
drug dealers/victims of the Baltimore inner city into the cast of arguably one
of the best shows in the history of television.
