And the panel has been trimmed from two segments to one, and from four down to
three. There are, of course, exceptions (such as the solo interview with
Norman Lear last week) but PGage has identified the pattern for the last few
months.
Wilmore is slated to sit down with Colbert on Friday. At this point Stephen
has talked with nearly everyone in that Vanity Fair late night photo (Maher is
on tonight).

That is consistent with how the show has evolved - originally the focus was on
the panel, but over the last several months, the panel has more clearly become
composed of one member of the staff, one lesser known comic, and someone who is
usually identifiable as a typical talk show guest, often with a specific
project to hype.
