Patton Oswalt gave the keynote speech as a comedian gathering (Marc Maron gave it last year). it's a pretty good speech and worth watching. He breaks it down into two letters: One to his fellow comedians and one to the network overlords. Oswalt is creating a new comedy show with veteran Phil Rosenthal. The network had notes for Oswalt and Rosenthal. The gist of the letter to the network is summarized in a quote by Rosenthal that Oswalt relates: It's post Louis CK and the networks are operating pre-According to Jim. He said he will politely tell the network no thanks and warns networks that they have to give the talent creative freedom. I have a couple of problems with what Oswalt said. He holds up a smart phone -- maybe an iPhone, I can't tell -- and says it has more movie making capability than Orson Welles had for Citizen Kane. Oswalt obviously doesn't have a clue about photography. They did a pretty good job back then. But I think there's a lot of truth in what he says. Look at the salary cuts and lay off NBC made the Tonight Show take. They have less money to use as leverage for people. And as Louis CK showed, in both his special and his TV show, there's ways of doing things and reaching an audience without the traditional network infrastructure.
