I used to work at the Veterans Administration, and more than a few times had to work with close relatives of an older guy who did something similar (though those guys usually shot themselves - more used to guns). DNR orders are one thing, but preemptive suicide is another. I found that most relatives still feel anger that they were cheated out of whatever time was left, and often guys do this somewhat impulsively, afraid of what the end stages will be like without fully processing it with somebody first. I did have a few HIV patients (back in the day) who killed themselves with close family around, after saying goodbye, that felt different.
