One of the best events of the Olympics has been the archery. I don't think
I am being influenced by the two recent films featuring bows and arrows, as
I am neither a 16 year old, nor a 6 year old girl. I think what is making
it particularly compelling is the (I believe) new scoring system, in which
the competition takes place in sets. Because of this, even if a shooter has
2 or 3 bad shots, it is not over.
I also like the announcers - and have been smiling because the expert
commentator sounds a hell of a lot like Greg Stink, the clueless
commentator played by Wil Forte on the SNL ESPN skit in which broadcasts
are sponsored by products like K-Y Jelly. The Olympic guy is not at all
clueless, and shares some interesting insights, but his voice is enough
like Stink's that it puts me in a constant good mood ('this is a tight
match - and next time you are in a tight spot, remember the premium
lubricants from the good people at K-Y Jelly").
Also of course, without giving any spoilers, Jennifer Lawrence's archery
coach has been featured prominently in today's coverage.
