I know nothing about the show, and care even less, but I find the idea of an elected official taking office and firing 24 people the first day stunning. I live in the northeast where public safety employees are unionized and any attempt to do a mass firing like that would backfire. Here is the story: http://www.wwltv.com/news/lafourche-terrebonne/Incoming-sheriff-says-hes-being-kept-in-dark-156898435.html Jerry Larpenter served as sheriff for 22 years until 2007 when he left to run for parish president and lost. His deputy, Vernon Bourgeois, was elected to take his place. It's Bourgeois who invited A&E to follow his officers for the TV show. Bourgeois decided not to run for another term and Larpenter ran, easily winning the race. Bourgeois refused to let Larpenter see what was going on in the office, and when Larpenter returned to office July 1, he found that Bourgeois had hired 100 new people and took on many new cars and a boat. The budget wouldn't cover the expanded department so Larpenter laid off 25 people and announced that he is selling 40 vehicles and the boat. In Louisiana sheriff's department employees are not civil service so they do not get that protection. It looks like Bourgeois liked the perks and the spotlight and did not care what it cost and Larpenter is just trying to get back under budget. -- TV or Not TV .... The Smartest (TV) People!
