A friend and I went to Studio 58 in TV City today to watch the Scottish Conan Guy. Today was the last day in 58 -- they move to the bigger space in Studio 56 after this run of shows has aired. We watched the show featuring Ariel Tweto who I first saw when Craig did his week of shows in Scotland. It is scheduled to air tomorrow.
The show taping was lightning fast (no band so no set redressing needed). They paused for less than a minute between segments -- sometimes the pause lasted less than 10 seconds. Craig spoke to the audience a bit, but we didn't see him until he walked out to do the monologue (cold open was pretaped). The warmup comic "Chunkie D" was innocuous (might have been "Chucky D") -- he has a horrible job to do and he does it. I stopped judging warmup comics after working as a crew member; at least I don't vocalize my judgments anymore. The side walls off-set looked to have been decorated with what was Tom Snyder's LA skyline during his tenure as Late Late host. If so, cool. If not, looked similar enough to fool me. I know not everybody on the list is a Craig fan, but I felt more of a creative energy at that taping vs. the Tonight Show tapings I attended over the years. While the show does have a set running order, there always seems to be a sense that you don't know quite what is going to happen -- you might not like what is going to happen, but whatever it is will be a surprise. Last time I was surprised on Leno's show was when he brought Kevin Smith on board to do a series of short films and travelogues -- that was a decade ago. Overall an easy show taping experience.
