It doesn't sound like you need a tutorial per se, simply to spend some time with Pythons format strings - like C printf() Otherwise the only other advice I'd give is to read some general books on data transformations - something like Michael Jacksons classic JSP book maybe? (Try your local university library! or Amazons second hand service...)
