The problem has been solved, and it was not related to TurboVNC.

In case anyone has the same problem, here's what I did:
  1. thorough reset of gnome settings:  dconf reset -f /org/gnome/
  2. remove all "Xft.dpi"-settings från your X-resource files (I had it
both in ~/.Xdefaults and ~/.Xresources).
