Yep, this is the reason -- I'd really, really prefer to stick with 2.8.7, even at the cost of adding -fPIC by hand on older cmake. I'm fine with requiring 2.8.9 on windows and other funny platforms, though -- if someone is willing to install cmake by hand, they could as well pick the latest version anyway, IMHO.
