The iOS email client loads remote content automatically by default. I don't know how many people read their email on their iPhones but I'm assuming the number eclipses the number of people using desktop clients like Thunderbird and Evolution. A lot of email clients have a "Load remote images" button, but then used to go on to load certain types of remote content *before* that button is clicked because of design flaws.
